StoryView vs. Power Structure

mikeb1.jpgI recently ran some comparison tests on two popular story-outlining software tools: StoryView, and Power Structure. Unlike Movie Magic Screenwriter and Final Draft, they are not intended to create a final script, but to help you create a story that will actually be worth turning INTO a script.

Both products have been around for several years and are well established. Being a software geek, I was curious to see how each stood up under prolonged use.

Fact is, while taking quite different approaches to outlining and story development, StoryView and Power Structure actually have quite a lot of good things in common.

Top 20 Things to Do Wrong (Right!)

Image This important list is important. It is based on months of experience and is recognized by the American Dental Association to be the best advice they know of about screenwriting. Actually, their exact quote was, "Ah, actually we..." The rest of their quote is irrelevant. But their endorsement was broad and deep and from the heart. 

This list of the things to do to make your script great is a profound revelation of story truth. I received this vision after I bumped my head on the freezer door reaching for an Icee-Pop. When I woke up, I stopped the bleeding by applying pressure, then immediately went to my laptop to write out the glory that had been revealed to me.

What?! You’re not writing a mystery!?! Oh, but you must be, my wanna-sell-a-screenplay friend! You truly must.

There are several reasons I insist, but I'll start with the most obvious one: Because, in the scores of spec screenplays I analyze/consult on each year, there’s hardly ever enough “mystery” to, what?... GRAB READERS AND KEEP 'EM HELD!
